What's in a Smile?

Friday, October 2 is World Smile Day. The perfect chance for us to do what we do best... SHINE and cast rays of light far and wide!

Four line history. In 1963 Harvey Ball, a commercial artist from Massachusetts, creates smiley face. Quickly, it becomes the most recognizable symbol of good will and good cheer. Harvey doesn't like the over-commercialization of his symbol, so in 1999 the inaugural World Smile Day was born. The intent? Get back to the basics. Devote one day to smiles and kind acts throughout the world. Want to know more? Click here.

I had fun brainstorming a few ways my family and I could celebrate.

Treat bags for your neighbors

A traveling treat for your office
(the other side of the note card is a smiley face)

New tooth brushes for the kids in your life

Cupcakes for your children's friends

A note on the desk of your favorite assistant

Smiley faces on windshields of cars

Today is Tuesday. Four days and an unlimited number of ways we could spread the word. Our goal today? Generate AS MANY IDEAS AS POSSIBLE. All day. Non-stop.

This is no time to be a bystander. Facebook a friend. Twitter. Pick up the phone, text a message, send a fax or even a smoke signal.

Today, the sheer number of comments counts. The more comments we have, the more ideas we generate. The more ideas we generate, the more likely we are to find one that works for us - and the more we shine!

See you in the comment section.

Signing off until tomorrow...

Okay I shared it on Facebook so that had me think...we could all change our facebook profile picture to a big smiley face...

We could post a comment on the walls of all our facebook friends that says SMILE!

We could take the cheesiest picture we have of ourselves or our children smiling and put in on a postcard to drop in the mail to out of town friends/family.

I'll work on generating more until then...SMILE!

I tend to smile at strangers in stores. Nine times out of ten, I get a smile back and then I tell them to "have a nice day" It's amazing what a smile can do!!! I guess I'm a little too outgoing at times.

We could all whistle "Don't worry, be happy" while in the grocery store!

:)

This is not an idea, but it's funny we're talking about smiles today, because late last night, someone shared a Bobby McFerrin video with me. Many of you might remember him as the singer of "Don't Worry, Be Happy".

This video of him made me smile last night. (It's not the "Don't Worry, Be Happy" song either.)

Send Hoops & YoYo e-cards to all of your family and friends. They breed smiles.

7:42 and already four ideas.

I love it.

Remember, sheer quantity works today.

How about... go to a site with quotes about smiles. Print them on smiley faces and distribute to all you encounter on Friday.

How about printing circular labels with smiley faces on them and having everyone where them for the day. Give them out to people who you feel shine all day long- wishing them a happy smile day.

Draw a giant smiley face in side walk chalk for everyone to see.

Bake smiley face cookies for everyone in your office.

Text a smiley face to your friends.

Help your child (or someone else's) make a smiley face picture and give it to someone they love.

Stick smiley face stickers in random places for people to find.

Okay, I have been a lurker long enough...
here are a few of my ideas:

have a toothbrush/toothbrush drive and donate them to a shelter

send a care package (including smile cookies) to a soldier overseas

take smiley face balloons and smiley face coloring sheets to a childrens hospital

make a collage of your kids smiling (with or without baby teeth)

send a sheet of smiley stickers for each child in a chosen classroom

play Louis Armstrong's "when your smiling" in your car with your car windows rolled down when sitting in traffic

thinking of ideas makes me smile :-)

I am totally on board with all of these ideas! I am all about dropping off cookies with smiley faces to people who make me smile - my hair stylist, friends, people at the YMCA etc.
Also - I would get smiley face stickers at the store and pass them out to people randomly - not only will that get a smile but probably some other random looks!
Since I work from home, I will also likely send a message to my co-workers encouraging them to smile and let them know to pass it on!

Thanks for jumping on board with Friday's activity, Jessie!

Check back on Friday and let us know which, if any, you were able to do.

How about putting a smiley face on the bathroom mirror for your kids or partner to see?

Holly is that you?!?! If so, where have you been hiding? Your ideas are great! We hope to see lots more of you.

Those of you living in the Pennsylvania area/region will know what I'm talking about here. Go to Eat 'N Park (home of the Smilie Cookie), purchase some, and ask that they be randomly given to customers who appear to need a pick-me-up, or something to brighten their day.

try to smile more at work. (ive found im too serious of a nurse). except i dont work fri. so ill do it tomorrow instead.

wear a smiley sticker on your forehead all day.

wear black pants and a yellow shirt to the Y when you work out, and pass out smiley stickers for everyone else to wear on their foreheads.

leave a note in the mailbox for the mailman (or in my case, woman) that says "smile" with a a smiley on it.

thats all i got for now.

i like the idea of texting all your contacts in your phone, and send a note to all your facebook friends about it!

Cassie... how about texting them today and letting them help us brainstorm more ideas.

Make smiley face toast for your kids.

A woman of few words, Peggy!

Not too bad for a full day's work, everyone. A few more before calling it a night would be perfect.

Paint "Smiley Face" Rocks and distribute to co-workers. They can use them as paperweights.

At the beginning of a staff meeting, take the first five or ten minutes to tell jokes to encourage laughing and smiling!

have like a smile sticker or something (with the idea like a simple thing such as a smile can make someones day) and then someone is in charge of passing out more stickers out to others and then it keeps going like a chain reaction

also...something that was introduced to me today in a class, you pass out a blue ribbon to someone that says you make a difference to me and then they are in charge of passing one on to someone else and then you have to go back and ask the person who they gave it to and why (this blue ribbon idea can be changed to relate to the smile thing)

hope this makes at least some sense
