Claudia here, back from Leadershape and loving every minute of it. My week away, with a group of motivated college students ready to improve the world, was every bit as rewarding as you might expect. We did a challenge course, talked Inclusive Leadership, wrote vision statements, set stretch and manageable goals, watched a thought provoking video about social entrepreneurship, discussed the discipline required in being a person of integrity, laughed a lot (even cried a little bit), and before leaving committed to staying the course on our leadership journeys.

Today's creative idea is compliments of the staff at the John Newcombe Tennis Center where I spent the last week. It happens the idea is perfectly timed for Memorial Day Weekend when the celebration of all things summer is top of the order.
Introducing the Gutter Sundae. It is the perfect solution to pool parties, end-of-season soccer parties, staff gatherings, neighborhood gatherings, and any other event where you're dishing out ice cream. It's every bit as simple as it looks...
Simply buy a piece of guttering from either Home Depot, Lowes, or your local hardware store. Line the gutter with tin foil and then build and serve your sundae. Unlike a big bowl, the Gutter Sundae stretches the length of the table and allows every one to dig in at once. Clean up is easy - pull out the tin foil (ice cream is usually gone) and hose it down. If you're like I am and have a hard time leaving well enough alone, consider decorating the outside of the gutter. Paint it with the name of your child's soccer team, draw a ruler, or sketch a sundae. The possibilities are endless!
So how about you? For what event might you use the Gutter Sundae and more importantly what would you put in yours? Bananas? Hot Fudge? Flavors of ice cream? Sprinkles or nuts?

I love a little bit of everything when it comes to ice cream.... cherries, nuts, chocolate, hot fudge, caramel, whip cream.... yum!!!

Having just spent last Wednesday with a stomach bug... I don't want to share my ice cream bowl.
I'm sure I'll get over it though and your students sure didn't seem to mind. Did it look pretty before they ate it?
Actually it wasn't my students eating it, but yes... it looked great!
Worried about germs? How about using graham crackers to create partitions between one person's serving and another?
My first thought was good way to spread the swine flu:) The graham cracker partitions would help that though! I'm thinking of doing a playground birthday party for Grace in the fall and I bet the kids would love that! It would be a fun, easy treat and they could decorate their sections themselves with toppings.

How funny that Cheryl, Erica and I all thought the same thing...I was trying to think if you could do tin foil dividers but the graham cracker dividers would work great too!

Indeed I did sleep in... I'm almost embarrassed to announce that I got out of bed at 1 p.m.
Anyhow, I love the gutter sundae idea, and I will be sure to share it with my RAs.
I prefer vanilla ice cream if I'm going to load up on toppings... Topping ice cream with your favorite sweet cereal is always a unique idea. But, if I'm making the sundae, I'm using vanilla ice cream, crushed up peanut butter cubs, peanut butter M&Ms, and some hot fudge.
I'm with Cheryl, Erica and Heather...gross! I would def be using graham crackers in mine! I think this would be a ton of fun for little ones. I can imagine all of the messy faces and hands.
I'm a fan of cheesecake ice cream with carmel and brownies or oreos (or both). I'm not in to sprinkles (or jimmy's as some call them) or nuts or whip cream. I'm a pretty plain jane.

My kids would totally dig this idea! How long of a piece of gutter do you get? We might do this for Ada's birthday! With 8 kids I'm wondering if I could just serve spaghetti this way...

Robin... The piece of gutter was about the length of a picnic table. I'm guessing about 5-6 ft. long.
Hey, for an even thicker "barrier" between servings, how about using brownies?!
i have no idea if people will see this bc im posting so late, but i've been keeping up with the blog, just not so much on the posting. anyway, if you've seen me on facebook you already know...
I had the twins on Friday, May 22 at 923/924pm via c-section. i was in preterm labor, they sent me home on bedrest, and then ended up back in the hospital a week later. They decided to take the babies bc i was in a LOT of pain and didnt want me to go into full on labor.
William Kyle Hanley - 4lbs 4 oz 17 inches long.
Jason Alexander Hanley - 4lbs 17 1/4 inches long.
They were born 7 weeks early, and while I'm going home tomorrow, the babies will be staying in the NICU for the next 3 or 4 weeks. Just wanted to let you guys know!

Thanks for the update! Congratulations. You and your family will be in all of our thoughts for the boys to join you at home as soon as possible and completely healthy. Before you know it those tiny munchkins will be saying "Mom" over and over again! :)
