First, a quick note. Can I pick 'em or can I pick 'em? I would say I hope each of you is enjoying Highlowaha's new contributors as much as I am, but I know you are because we have had close to 700 visits to our site in the past six days. At this rate, we're sure to top last year's record of 5,000 views in 46 days!
Another day, another orientation event.
Today we introduce (or reintroduce, as the case may be) one of Highlowaha's favorite traditions - The Random Acts of Kindness Box (RAK Box).
Background. One week last year I was feeling "blah." It could have been the tides, alignment of planets, a bad week for Libras, dreary weather, PMS.... Who knows. I'm a firm believer, however, that one of the quickest ways to snap yourself out of a bad mood is to do something nice for someone else. I quickly declared that week Random Acts of Kindness Week and for six days we performed a daily act of kindness. One day I left gently used books for the taking at Starbucks. Another day I challenged all of you to join me in doing a random act of kindness, and on a third day I introduced to you my Random Act of Kindness Box.
Each Highlowaha reader was invited...asked... begged... implored... to send me a postcard with his or her address. Once a postcard was received it was placed in my Random Acts of Kindness Box and then, when I was feeling particularly blue... or generous, I dug into my box and randomly selected someone to be the winner of a prize. All kinds of fun items were given away, from baked goods to cookbooks, fun pads of paper, gift cards, and t-shirts to name a few. It's a new year, but this old idea is here to stay.
Part of this stunt is about me loving mail. If you send me a postcard with your address on it then I get mail and you become eligible for fun Highlowaha prizes. It's a win win. Problem. If I let returners rest on their laurels and use last year's postcard, then I get less mail and new readers think, that next year at this time they can also sit back and eat bon bons. If, however, the playing field is leveled so, each year old and new readers alike must submit a new postcard, then newcomers are assured their place at the table is just as secured as a long-time reader.
Yeah, yeah, I know... this means you having to get (or make) a postcard, slap a .27 cent stamp on it, and make a trip to the post office. I'd better sweeten the pot if I'm going to get the likes of readers such as AZLori, and other post office avoiding folks to participate. It just so happens I can. Weeks ago I did a training session and got paid in the form of a Target Gift Card. Rather than walk in the store and have the $100.00 disintegrate, before I get passed the Dollar Bins, I've decided I want to invest it in you (alright... and in a week's worth of good mail. I'm not totally selfless).
There are four $25.00 Target gift cards for the taking. Here's all you need to know about winning one. Send me a postcard to Claudia Beeny at 4012 Harvestwood Court, Grapevine, Texas 76051. On the back, include your name and address. If you're a lurker and don't want me to know your name, then just sign it "Loyal Lurker." Include the name and address of a friend and he/she will also get a shot at winning one of the $25.00 gift cards. Cards will be distributed as follows:
- One $25.00 Target Gift Card goes to the person who sends the first postcard I receive.
- One $25.00 Target Gift Card goes to the 18th post card I receive.
- The remaining two $25.00 Target Gift Cards go to the reader whose name (and whose friend's name) I draw from the Random Acts of Kindness Box on Friday, March 6.
That gives you all plenty of time to get your postcard, get your stamp, and get them in the mail! One more note. Heather made her first official Highlowaha post yesterday and yielded close to $500.00 in donations. I'm trying to give money away. Don't let her show me up... please! She's competitive and she'll never let me live it down.

Claudia - How was your first day?
I like the RAK box.I've been trying to do more RAKs. I got foiled last week when I tried to buy the person in line behind me at Starbuck's coffee - they hadn't ordered yet! Their bad luck. But the barista told me I'd made her day. I tried again a few days later and succeeded. My 8 yo daughter likes this a lot.
Good morning HLA! I will re-rad this all again when I have some brain function. Its just one of those ice cold NY mornings and I havent had my coffee yet! Cant be successful without coffee RIGHT?
Be back later.....
My first day was great and today I head back for a day of HR.
Thanks for all the well wishes everyone.
Good morning!!
I love the RAK box and will be sending my postcard in later this week.
Patchwork Denim update: We currently have photos from Robin, Cassie P and Peggy! Get your photos in by 5 pm tomorrow!
And I have one thing to say about being back in VA...BRRRRR it's cold out there! It's a high of 17 outside right now. Oh how I wish I could stay inside all day today..
I might have to send my postcard in a big envelope so I can send HLA some other surprise snail mail, and since I'm frugal, I have to figure this out.... mmmmm?
more mail (PC) on the way... I love this idea... I have been using those postcards I won for mail RAKs... little rectangles of love flying thru the mail...
Good morning all.
Happy Fat Choosday!! Did you or are you making your King Cake today? What's for dinner? Jambalaya or Etouffee? Margaret brought a King Cake to work today but I have vowed to myself that I will not eat it because of our fitness contest!! I'm working too hard to spoil it.
I will get my postcard mailed in soon and I have to remember to send in a photo of my patchwork jeans! They are so cool! I love them! So much to do, so little time!
So much fun this morning! I will pick up a postcard when I go out later this morning.
Maybe a dumb question, but is our Goal Fishing mail supposed to be anonymous? I am sending out my first little note today and I didn't know whether to sign my name or not.
Kat - I think it was decided NOT anon.
I made a king cake for breakfast!
Excellent! Thanks, Robin!
Good morning all! Just dropping by to say hi and that I LOVE doing RAK. I think I'm going to send out lots of mail today...just one of those day :)
Claudia - glad your first day was good!
I just put my stamps on my postcard and my donation check. I just have to do my RAK today and I have to say I did some woman an amazing RAK yesterday!
I was online in Costco and this woman with 2 crying babies was behind me with a much larger wagon than mine and I let her go ahead of me so she could get out of there quicker. She was sooooo excited you would think I gave her the winning Lotto ticket.
My husband of course said I did it to get rid of the kids so I didnt have to listen to them.... I must admit it was an act of kindness that was 2 fold LOL
Have a great day HLA!
Tera let me know if you received my recipe so I dont just assume you have it already! Thanks:)
Dr. B!
I have to tell you that I really enjoy seeing daily e-mails from HLA in my inbox. It serves as a nice reminder, especially on hectic days.
So far I've gotten emails with recipes from Margaret, Melanie & Katie K. Maureen...I didn't get one from you yet.
Tera, she sent it to the HLA email address. I just forwarded it along to you!
Yes...Maureen...I got it! thanks, KTK
Emailing a recipe would make sure I got it done... :-) Where can I email mine?
