OK, at this early morning hour I have to go to work, and I do not feel well. Maybe I'm feeling a little cynical, maybe not. BUT I think I'm on Cheryl's side in the SHINE argument. It doesnt seem purposeful to me to go to washington or north carolina for the SHINE campaign. Thats all.

I have a few things to say:

1. You could have cut the tension in that room with a knife! I could have cut it over the phone too, but dang, women!

2. I'm sticking by my argument that we should go for it. And here is why, even though it may be 'crazy'. Is HLA not about doing the things which others might deem impossible or a waste of time? Are we not about taking time out to do the things that people wouldn't normally take the time to do??

3. I come from a town that doesn't have a square...I'm just saying.

PS. Love you, Cheryl!

Happy Friday everyone! First Heather, I still can't hear you, I could hear everyone else - I know you have a loud voice down there somewhere :)
I can see both sides of the arguement... What if we look for cities that "Shine" instead of the name shine? While I am all for Shine, NC since it's only 4 1/2 hours from me. I think we could direct our focus to communities that work dillegently on giving back and are good examples other communities could follow. So what do you think about "cities that shine"?
I will have to put on my creativity hat for a tagline so I will have to let some ideas marinade in this brain and get back to you. :)
Kate - seriously you do need to play the lottery, you're on a hot streak!!

I could hear you all fine when you were worked up and debating...then you lost me at about 7:50...I will try to finish viewing later. I like you when you are opinionated...it is nice and audible!

Have a great day,
Sporadic Spy

I agree with Cheryl.
To use the premise that you should go to a "Shine: location - why limit it to those 2 locations. Why does it have to be a city - why not the Shine nightclub, there's a Shine store in Ft. Worth or why not go to the Shine festival in Singapore.
I think that you should focus on the premise of the Shine campaign not just the name Shine. Why not kick it off at a location that embodies the premise of the campaign. This may or may not be a location whose name is shine.

Look, if you ladies want to go stand under the flashing yellow light at the one intersection next to the gas station and the mechanics shop because you love the name Shine then by all means you should go for it. You are stuck on a name. Why not go to CelebRAYtion, FL or Ray, ND- it is his campaign and they both seem to have an established small community. My personal favorite would be to travel down to Shiner, Texas- they're famous for making beer. Maybe I can get the Strubles to come with me and Chaotic could come on over.

Yes, we're talking about making time to do things that others don't. It doesn't make our time and our energy any less valuable to think these things out and make wiser decisions.

I'm just saying.

Okay. Now on the Tag Line note...

The problem we are having is that when we say "Where creativity and community meet" people tend to think that we are just talking about crafty ideas where as we're using the word creativity to encompass a much broader sense of creativity.

So, on Facebook Peggy had said it's like going to Camp. Are we Camp Highlowaha? We often say "We're building a city." Are we Highlowaha, USA? Are we the Looneybin and need to call in the doctors for our meds? :) What are we? Who are we? And what short tag can get that message across to new members? I don't have an answer...

I think I said, "HLA is like camp for grown ups!!!"

Shine wherever you hang your heart!

S - suggestions
H - hearten
I - inventiveness in (imagine, interests)
N - novel
E - exploration

Shine all around the world!

Shine out of Grapevine, but have satalite coorespondence centers out of Shine, WA and Shine, NC

When I first read Highlowaha it sounded like an Indian name, or camp name.

Shine and make the world a brighter place! Accomplishing inspiration daily. ShineAID

Don't get rid of creativity!

I'm quickly weighing in since I'm in and out of training sessions today as new faculty come on campus.

I love the thought of the Shine Project and rolling it out in a small town that we can really impact...I mean picture a small town in the middle of nowhere and we show up and bring the Shine message...I really think it would impact lives in a way we couldn't if we rolled out in a bigger city mainly because in these little towns we can integrate into EVERY aspect of their lives...school, grocery, home, on the road, at the gas station, you get the picture.

Mainly though I just think we as a community owe it to ourselves and to the Shine Project to fully explore life's possibilities before writing them off as impractical or a waste of time. I've heard more than one person tell Claudia that her writing this blog is a waste of time and yet here we are a thriving community thanks to her committment to the extraordinary.

Remember the story of the boy and the starfish?

One day a man was walking along the beach when he noticed
a boy picking something up and gently throwing it into the ocean.

Approaching the boy, he asked, “What are you doing?”

The youth replied, “Throwing starfish back into the ocean.
The surf is up and the tide is going out. If I don’t throw them back, they’ll die.”

“Son,” the man said, “don’t you realize there are miles and miles of beach and hundreds of starfish?
You can’t make a difference!”

After listening politely, the boy bent down, picked up another starfish,
and threw it back into the surf. Then, smiling at the man, he said…”
I made a difference for that one.”

Explore the possibility...

What I love is that, as a community, we are engaged in this discussion.

I feel certain, in the end, that we are coming from similar core values - being a positive force in the lives of others. Where we do it, how we do it... these are all questions to be considered.

My reservation with simply writing off Shine, NC and Shine WA, simply because they are small and APPEAR lifeless, is that we might miss a gift that fate has to offer.

We took a random exit off the highway in the middle of nowhere, on our trip to Austin, and ended up at an old, run down cemetery rich with family history. It was a high point to my summer, yet a place I would never have set out to go.

The optimist in me wonders what Shine NC and WA has waiting for us. Who will we meet and how will they make our life just a little bit richer. We don't know, but I think we all agree...

There is greatness in everyone - even the person tucked away in one of these small towns - and it takes only a single person to create some magic.

That's what I'm thinking. At least right now.

Cheryl Houston said...

Listen. I'm not against the Shine Project. I don't think that the community we are trying to build and the message we are trying to promote are a waste of time. And I'm not against small towns.
At some point you have to realize that time- everyone's time- is a precious commodity and we need to use it wisely.

I think our energy trying to find a non-existent mayor and trying to pit these two spots on the road is not using our time wisely or going to create a sense of magic.

Just because we took an exit and wound up in a wonderful cemetary doesn't mean I want to go back to Cox Cemetary and promote the message of Shine.

You're set on it. You're mind is made up. You think you can make the difference in those peoples lives? Go for it.

I'm not on the band wagon. I don't have to agree with everything and that's the beauty of this community. Pick and choose what works for you. What you're talking about doesn't work for me but at the end of the day- we're still all friends and there a lot of other projects that I can put forth my efforts.

Suddenly, and unfortunately, it seems this discussion has ended up between Cheryl and me exclusively.

I'm actually most interested in hearing from all members of our community.

You have an idea of the considerations I'm milling over and I'm pretty darn sure you know where Cheryl is coming from.

How about you?

I would love the Shine project to kick off at Taste of USA when there are a lot of us together.

I'm pretty spent today, so that's all I have. :-)
