What a Ball!
- Get a roll of crepe paper streamers and a handful of trinkets. We used yellow streamers and trinkets such as: smiley face balls, necklaces, tiny erasers, confetti, parachute men, a key chain, and a few other chatchka.
- Begin rolling the first item in a piece of crepe paper.
- Continue rolling the crepe paper, slowly adding additional chatchka.
- If easier, cut crepe paper and begin a new strand with each additional item rolled into your ball.
- Once all items are included, wrap a few additional layers of crepe paper to round out your shape.
- Use ribbon, jewels, foam shapes, buttons, and other accents to dress up the outside.

Power of Shine
We arrived at the airport at 1:30 p.m. ready to depart Louisville. We arrived in Dallas at 12:30 a.m.
I crawled into bed at 1:40 a.m.
Other than that, Taste of USA was a success. If you were not able to attend, have no fear, we will be using part of this week to recap highlights. Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday we will share favorite craft ideas from Taste of USA. Friday we will take time-out to reflect on highs, lows, and ahas for the month, and on Saturday Heather will present a short video recapping highlights from the day. It’s a week you won’t want to miss.
Saturday’s Taste of USA festivities were capped off with an official ribbon cutting for our Shine Rayvolution (click here to find out more). We unveiled shirts designed by you months ago and encouraged participants to purchase a shirt for someone who they think shines. Don’t worry, we saved shirts for you and hope you too will consider presenting a shirt to someone who you think shines. You’ll never find a better gift for $10.00. Get yours by posting in the comment section or sending an note to our email at info@highlowaha.comHeather, Cheryl, and I had to put our money where our mouth is… or at least live the Shine shirts we were wearing. Our flight was to be delayed by more than ten hours. Rather than mope about travel plans gone awry, we shined. The three of us embarked on a game of Purse Scavenger Hunt. I shouted out an item and they searched their purses to see who could retrieve it first. Point to whoever was successful.
Then we held an anniversary party. Peggy (a different one) and Chris were stuck in the airport, instead of celebrating their 29th wedding anniversary in Las Vegas as planned. Quick, and in true Highlowaha fashion, Heather, Cheryl, and I rallied the troops of Gate A14, rummaging and scrounging until we found the makings of an anniversary party.
There was more. We made friends with Shawn and his new-found friend Kenny we cheered on Jordan who took up residence in an empty wheel chair and aptly moved from one place to another, and we made friends with Joe and Susie from Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
But what really happened yesterday in terminal A was a reminder of the power of shining. For all intent and purposes a horrific day of travel. But armed with Shine shirts and the right attitude Heather, Cheryl, and I were able to build a community. Yesterday we shined and because of it many peoples’ days were made brighter.
How will you shine today and whose day will you make?

Kentucky or Bust!!
Good morning, Highlowaha! Today, I'm looking for your input for our Second Annual Taste of USA trip. Ten of us made the trip last year to Philadelphia and we had a great time. As your Cruise Director I would like for us to at least double that number and the competitor in me would like to see the number triple. 30 people living the Spirit of 218. Taking time out of our lives to come together- physically, not virtually- and have a great day of creativity and community. Sounds great doesn't it?Get your calendars out. We are looking at two dates. Our first choice and our preference is Saturday, September 12th. Our second choice is September 26th. How's it looking for you?
Our destination is Louisville, Kentucky. Walk, bike, drive, jump a train or flap your wings and fly. I don't care how you get there but just get there. The Dallas crew will fly in the night before and head back out on Sunday. Our day will start at 9:00 am. We will break at noon for lunch and reconvene at 1:00 pm. We will plan to stop the official meeting at 4:00 pm but the fun doesn't have to stop there. Last year we enjoyed dinner together for those of that stayed and then drinks.
We are assembling the details for a fun filled day... would you like to learn how to flood and decorate a cookie? Or, make a box from a card? Or, learn how to make your own greeting card? (Peggy, you're coming right?) I'm telling you what you really need to learn is how to tie a bow by Claudia! You will never need to have someone put there finger on the string again!
So, what's your task today?
- Dates- I know we won't please everyone but we will please the majority of you because we're DemocRAYtic that way.
- Topics- want to learn something? Let us know. One of us will learn how, find someone that knows how or whatever it takes to teach you.
- Want to teach something to the group? We'd be happy to have you participate!
- Are you in?
- And if you're not... what silly thing will I volunteer myself to do for you at Taste of USA that will make you want to come? (You can include the group of us if you want.) Do I need to wear purple boots while doing the River Dance? Do a cheer every hour on the hour? Sing the song I wrote for the Olympics- though I'm pretty sure you would only be torturing yourself with that one. You're a creative group, throw out some ideas.
That's what I need: Dates, Topics, Are you coming, Make the Cruise Director Dance... Give it to us!
ANNOUNCEMENTS:
*Ray is Twittering! Are you following him? He's busy spreading the news about RAK!
*You can now easily share Highlowaha! There should be a link at the bottom of this post that says Share. Go ahead! Spread the news! Katie will give further direction if need be in today's comment section.
You are a great group of people and I am honored to be in your company! Thanks for all your participation!! Signing off until tomorrow...Tuesday, April 28, 2009
We Interrupt This Regularly Programmed Show
Claudia was encouraged by our comments and she announced the next day that she wanted us, the readers, to give her somewhere to go. She pulled out her Van Oech Whack Pack and asked us to come up with a way for us to decide a couple of things; first, where would she go and second how to decide where to go?
She initially said she would take roll call and throw out 4-5 states a week and then we would have to post something about our state and she would rate our participation. We pulled the Van Oech card that said to Combine Ideas. Treye threw out the "Taste of" idea and the ball just started rolling from there. And that's where the fun all began.
We created a second blog, Taste of USA, and I put up little tidbits of each state throughout the months of May, June and July. One of our readers suggested that I go with Claudia to this all-creative, all-entertaining party and being the desperate single mom looking for an adults only vacation, I was completely game! In the end it came down to a rolling vote in the comment section on the last day of the contest, a Free For All Friday, with neighboring states, Pennsylvania and New York battling it out. On July 25th, Pennsylvania won by a nose and our day was set for September 6th.

While at Taste of USA in rainy Philadelphia, Tera, Treye, Julie, Amy, Claudia and I were having dinner after a fun day of running in the rain, eating Philly Cheese steaks and lots of cupcakes, after sharing creativity ideas, and lots of laughter (and where the dinner waitress had NO time for us) when Julie and Tera came up with West Coast battles East Coast. They even went back to their rooms where they spent a great deal of time coming up with brackets. It was awesome! Thank you both so much for your enthusiasm.
We didn't stay with the girls "West Coast vs. East Coast" theme but decided to seed the states based on the most readers/visitors from each state. Taste of USA 2009 will be rolling out on Monday, May 4th. It's going to be a ton of fun! And it's going to be super-fast paced so we need you to keep up and vote! There are 3 brackets. They are the Liberty, Freedom and Independent brackets. Every Monday through Friday for the month of May we will have one voting competition for each bracket. All you have to do is vote for the state you would be most willing to go to for Taste of USA 2009 - an explosion of creativity and entertainment with Highlowaha! I will warn you now: There is no Free For All Friday and we will know our destination by the end of May! Once we know our destination, we will decide on the best time for our adventure but we are looking at an early September weekend. Full details and bracket information are available today over at Taste of USA.
Claudia, Heather, Katie and I want you there! Where do you want to go?
Don't think I've forgotten about our Give-away Derby. We have a fun Travel Pack to get you ready for the trip. Enter today's drawing by submitting the answer to these three questions:
1. If I could go anywhere in the world, I would go to ___________________.
2. If I could go anywhere in the continental US, I would got to ___________________.
3. My all time favorite vacation was when I was ___ years old when I went to _______________.

Taste of USA Recap
- Cake pan winner: After much deliberation, the winner of our over-sized cupcake pan is Stacie W. from Louisville, Kentucky. She proposed the next "must-have" big item that Amy and I should have is an over sized rubber chicken. We agreed. Congratulations, Stacie.

- TONIGHT! Countdown to the Super Bowl: Tonight starts our Football Snack Throw Down at Struble Suds. Brian and Richard are facing down with BACON as their secret ingredient. Wanna make a prediction about who will win?
- Patchwork: You may or may not know that Highlowaha has opportunities for you to win patches to be attached to something denim (jeans preferably; a jacket; a denim apron, or even a hat). I have thirteen patches to be given away - one on each night of a Green Bay Packer Game. The patch will go to whoever comes closest to guessing the final score of the game. Inquiring minds want to know... how many of you have your patchwork apparel designated and already have a patch attached? It's never too late to start.
