What if these walls could talk?

Welcome to Art History 101 at the University of Highlowaha. When Claudia announced that we would connect a cookie cutter to Bucknell University's Orientation theme of O-Museum I thought "How the heck is she going to do that?"

After the Corn Cookie Cutter was selected I thought, "Oh, she is so in trouble." When I asked her about it and she told me her idea of If These Walls Could Talk the corny art jokes started rolling and I was hooked.

Looking at art I do sometimes wish that walls could talk. And the paintings, too. Wouldn't it be great if when you were standing in front of a painting or photograph or sculpture it could talk and tell you what the artists was doing and saying? Think- Night of the Museum or Harry Potter.

Let's take a look at some of our artwork and the paintings that inspired them and learn some fun facts about the artist. First up is Joan Miro.

Joan Miro (1893-1983) was from Spain. Miro's parents would have much preferred that he find a career in business. He tried to please them and worked as an accountant until he had a nervous breakdown. Afterwards, his parents finally accepted his choice but not with much support. His paintings have a childlike quality to them and he often compared his art to poetry. He met Picasso and many of the other great artists in Paris.

Pablo Picasso (1881-1973) hails from Spain and is called a master artist. He displayed talent at an early age and mastered any medium or art form he chose. He created a staggering number of paintings, sculptures and drawings. Just imaging the passion for art that he must have embodied. We could have a whole year worth of blogs to learn all there is to learn about him. The Blue Period, the Rose Period, Cubism, the African Period and the list goes on.

During the Spanish Civil War, there was bombing of the Basque town of Guernica by the German air force. Responding to this massacre, Picasso painted a mural Guernica. For months afterwards he made subsidiary paintings based on one of the figures in the mural: a weeping woman holding her dead child. Weeping Woman is the last and most elaborate of the series. The woman's features are based on Picasso’s lover Dora Maar.

Art doesn't have to always be pretty. It can make a political statement about the ideas that the artist supports.

Next up is Vincent Van Gogh. He has to have one of the most memorable stories about his ear being sliced off. We thought we were pretty clever with that EAR of corn. So we know that Van Gogh suffered with mental issues that included epilepsy, psychotic attacks, and delusions. There is the famous story that he self-mutilated by cutting off his own ear, offered as a gift to a prostitute and then was hospitalized. But! Two German Art Historians have spent ten years researching the incident and now believe that Van Gogh's artist buddy, Paul Gauguin who just happened to fence actually cut Van Gogh's ear off and the two of them hushed it up! You can read the full story here.

On July 27, 1890, Van Gogh shot himself in the chest and died two days later. His brother, Theo, had collected the majority of Van Gogh's work but he died a short 6 months later. Theo's wife took the work and dedicated herself to getting Van Gogh the credit that we realize today.

Last up today is Andy Warhol.

Andy Warhol (1928 - 1987) was an accomplished commercial illustrator turned painter, printmaker, and filmmaker and is known for his leadership in the movement known as Pop Art. His success as an illustrator made it difficult for him to be taken serious as a painter. But, he used his success as an illustrator to merge popular culture into his work. Pop culture items like Campbell's Soup Cans, Coca-cola, Marilyn Monroe, Elizabeth Taylor.

He became ill with a nervous system disease when he was about 8. This caused him to have to stay at home in bed which led to a strong bond with his mother. He became a hypochondriac and was fearful of hospitals and doctors. Warhol was another complex artist and personality that we could go on and on about. These tidbits are nothing to his full story.

He was shot in June of 1968 and never fully recovered from it. He died in 1987 after a routine gall bladder surgery.

He is responsible for the phrase Fifteen minutes of fame.

There's a little, tiny bit of art history of only 4 of the thousands and thousands of artist out there. Every day we are given a blank canvas. What we choose to do with that blank canvas is up to us.

The first photo you saw today was your blank canvas. And, your challenge today is tell us which artist you would choose to inspire you. Is it an old master or a modern day artist? Which painting would you pick? Who inspires you?

Now Departing: National Ice Cream Month

The moment many of you have been waiting for. One day left before bidding farewell, for another year, to National Ice Cream Month. Finally we are featuring July's celebratory cookie - compliments of Fancy Flours.

Background. Once a month Highlowaha partners with Fancy Flours to host a Cookie Cutter Challenge. I identify a holiday worth celebrating and you identify the cookie cutter I must incorporate into the celebration. It's a challenge, because many of you select the cookie cutter you think least likely or least related (i.e. National Ice Cream Month and airplanes, Richard's birthday and mermaids, Earth Day and porcupines). Once the cutter is identified, I have one month to make the cookies and "serve them up."

This month was a double challenge. Not only did I have to find the point of intersection between ice cream and planes, but I also need to construct (literally) the 3-D airplane cookies. Baking 3-D cookies are not for the faint of heart. In fact, I'd say the ideal resume of a 3-D cookie maker is part baker, part architect.

I haven't quit my day job, but still I'm pretty pleased with what I, and the rest of my flight crew, came up with. Take a look.

Now Departing: First Class Sundae!

You'll notice, we kept "decorating" to a minimum. Only the tips of the wings were dipped in chocolate. The cookie itself is so remarkable, we wanted to keep the main thing the main thing. Each cookie sat atop a mountain of ice cream surrounded by cumulus whipped cream clouds. Weather conditions changed as passengers showered their "plane" sundaes with crushed Oreos, coconut, sprinkles, nuts, or hot fudge.

For added touches, baggage tags served as napkin rings and boarding pass sleeves served as covers to our First Class Sundae invitations.

Two cookie tasks today.

First, win your own 3-D cookie cutter by making the winning suggestion (as judged by me, Cheryl, Heather, and Katie) for another occasion when you might use the airplane and the accompanying slogan.

Second. Help select the cookie cutter for next month. Theme?...

College campuses all around the country are gearing up to present their award winning orientation programs and welcome week activities to the class of 2013 (or so). I am sure there are impressive things happening everywhere, but the one program in the country I have the most fun following is the Orientation program at Bucknell University.

The Assistant Dean in charge of their program is one of the most visionary, most creative, and one of the biggest thinkers I know. Student staff at Bucknell must feel like they've returned to campus early, not only to selflessly serve new students for a week, but also to step foot into Disneyland. From theme to decorations, to leader treats, to table decorations, and promotional materials, there is no detail unattended.

Today we will gear up to celebrate Bucknell's orientation program. This year's theme? Tricky, that's what it is. The theme they will bring to life, under her leadership, is...

"O" Museum. She will transform portions of her campus to be exhibits of dinosaurs, air and space exhibits, a portrait gallery, and leader-created modern art. Maybe in early fall I will work with the Assistant Dean to feature pictures of her production. Then you can see the magnitude of what I'm so ineptly describing.

In the meantime... give me my cookie cutter. What's it going to be? Peruse the Fancy Flour museum of cookie cutters and find me the one you think I ought to have to use. Then tune in early next week to find out the winner.

Fin For All Friday

Another Friday, another fun video. Sit back and enjoy...

Laughing so hard you missed the result of the Fancy Flours Cookie Cutter Challenge?...

A quick recap.

This month the holiday we were celebrating was my husband's birthday, so it seemed only appropriate that I be the packaging - mermaid costume and all. The tag line... "I flip for you!"
Here's a close up of the cookies. Thanks to my sidekicks for helping me pipe and flood.

Win your very own mermaid cookie cutter by posting in the comment section. Share your idea for another occasion when you might use the mermaid cookie cutter and the tag line to go along with it. If we vote yours the best, you'll win.

Want to vote on the cookie cutter to be used in July's challenge? Check back on Thursday, July 2.

It's Time to Get Wet & Wild

Jump on in! It's Backyard Game Week. Monday, Claudia showed us how to make a Gutter Sundae. Some of us were grossed out about the sharing aspect but Claudia fixed that by adding either a graham cracker or brownie barrier. Yesterday Claudia showed you how to use a Big Mouth Bass cookie cutter from Fancy Flours to create and invitation for a Backyard Party. Today I am happy to be talking about having fun in the sun while splishing and splashing! I hope it's getting warm in your neck of the woods because summer is my favorite time of year. For me, the hotter the better. I feel very fortunate to have a pool right out back so that when we wake up on the weekends, we pull on our suits, slather on the sunscreen and start the day off swimming.

As a kid I spent my summers at the public swimming pool sliding, diving and flipping. Pulling from my memory banks, I remember the classic game of Marco Polo or maybe you prefer Sharks and Minnows. Do you remember playing chicken on the shoulders of a friend? Or, under water tea parties? What was it called when you go underwater hold hands with a friend, matching up your feet and pushing so that your bottoms bumped. Hours of fun! I didn't care what I was doing as long as I was in the water.

What every pool needs and what I didn't have growing up is noodles! You have to have noodles. You blow air threw one in and you have a whale or a fountain or good ol' splash in the face. Sit on them to keep you afloat. My 7 and 8 year old boys spend more time chasing each other around the pool trying to pelt each other with the noodles or shoot each other with a water gun that I've got my constant life guard voice saying, "WALK!" They climb in and out of the pool so much I know they're getting an arm workout. They make me tired just watching. Oh, and no day is complete at the pool until everyone has done a cannonball! Even me.

But what if you don't have a pool?
Enter the hose and sprinkler. They make so many fun sprinklers now days but even 30 years ago I remember the clown sprinkler we had. The water pushed up his hat and you ran through the stream. My favorite is still the classic sprinklers that just wave back and forth. Before I got the irrigation system installed the boys loved helping water the yard. I use the word helping lightly.

What about a slip and slide? They've come a long way baby! We just had the yellow strip that went across the yard. No cushy ending to catch you. You just slid off the end. Now they have the blow up sides to stop you at the end. They even have boards that you can slide on to prevent stomach rashes and things you can slide under- like 3-D shark mouths! Yes! The goggles JB is wearing are 3D Goggles! What will they think of next?

So, when the summer heat starts beating down, jump in the nearest pool, break out the hose and sprinkler systems, get the super soaker guns out and cool down. What's your favorite way to beat the heat? I don't know about you but this is my favorite... (my extra cold beer is missing in this picture!)

ANNOUNCEMENTS:
Yesterday's winner was Sporadic Spy for "I feel like a fish out of water without you." SS, what now? Care to cast us a clue? You won a Big Mouth Bass Cookie Cutter!!! Where do we send it?

Rock the VOTE! Don't forget to go over to Taste of USA to vote for either Virginia or Ohio today. Polls open around 6:30am CST. Tomorrow is between Indiana and New York. Friday we have our final poll!

Hit Me With Your Best Shot

Claudia here welcoming you back after a long, intense month of celebrating women, celebrating creative ideas, and celebrating women with creative ideas. What a month it's been!

Before putting the FINAL punctuation mark on our March Madness, two final announcements... Congratulations Lindsay! Your name was drawn as winner of the second deck of, "Women Who Ride The Trail of Truth" cards. Maybe you and your friends can put them to good use at your next, "I Love Food Club" meeting. Second. The recipients of the women you voted most deserving of the award "Woman Who Take the Cake" received their cakes yesterday. Having said that... Good-bye March and...

Hello April!

I think Heather, Katie, and Cheryl would join me in saying we are excited to return to the free-wheeling format we are used to. New day, new topic. No two topics connected, unless of course we get a wild hair and want to create a theme week. So what's in store for today?

Cookies.

Those of you new to the scene might not know 2008 was the year I learned how to pipe and flood cookies. I love this skill. I think I should be able to add it to my resume. You know, Claudia K. Beeny, Ph.D., Master Piper and Flooder. A sugar cookie is just a sugar cookie until you learn how to pipe and flood. Learn this skill and all of a sudden a sugar cookie turns into a million-dollar looking gift, suitable for the your most deserving teachers, neighbors, and colleagues.
"I'm Watching You" Halloween Cookies

"Luck-o-the Irish" Leprachaun Cookies

"SWAK" Valentiene Cookies

Then I had an idea. Introduce you to my all time favorite cookie cutter website - FancyFlour.com - the place dreams are made of. Here at the home of over 600 cookie cutters, the sky is the limit on creativity. There is not a person or occasion for which Fancy Flours does not have a cookie cutter. Need a cookie cutter in the shape of a wrench? Fancy Flours has it. Motorcycle? Got it. Helicopter? Check. Hockey stick, beaver, bathing suit, or chicken leg? Got it. Got it. Got it. And, got it.

But the introduction to Fancy Flours is just the beginning.

Then I had another idea. Challenge you to challenge me. So here's how it will go once a month for the next year. Each month we'll pick an occasion to celebrate. This month? Earth Day (April 22). Each month you will also be invited to browse the Fancy Flour website for the most outrageous, most unseemly, most ridiculous cookie cutter you can find. My challenge? Use the winning cookie cutter (determined by most votes or random drawing) to bake, decorate, package, and deliver a treat that connects your cookie with my holiday. For example, should we have started last month I might have been challenged to connect St. Patrick's Day to the Ostrich cookie cutter.

It gets better. It turns out Fancy Flours liked our idea too. They're playing along. Each month Fancy Flours will send us two of the winning cookie cutters. One is for me to use in the challenge and the other will go to a lucky reader.

Ready to play?

It's easy. Simply (1) click on this link to the site then scroll to the bottom of the page and click on cookie cutters. (2) Pick your jaw up off the floor and then select the one you think will pose the greatest challenge. (3) Make a post in the comment section letting us know which one you picked. Like the one someone else picked out? Cast a second vote for theirs. Thursday morning we will announce the winner. Now let's cook up some fun...
